Traffic Fines 2026: what you need to know if you’re on the road a lot!

Traffic fines have increased again in 2026 by an average of 3 to 4%. This applies to common traffic violations in the Netherlands and abroad. Find out what these traffic fine updates mean for you as an active road user.

What you need to know about traffic fines in 2026 in the Netherlands

  • Fines increase by an average of 3–4%
  • Administration costs remain €9
  • Amounts are more often rounded up to whole tens, making fines higher than expected
  • Foreign traffic fines are increasingly sent directly to your home address

Common traffic fines in the Netherlands in 2026

  • Holding a phone while driving: €440
  • Running a red light: €320
  • Tailgating: from €380 (amount depends on speed)

Using your phone in traffic in 2026: what’s allowed and what’s not?

Using your phone in traffic is only allowed when it is placed in a holder, for example for navigation or hands-free calling. Holding your phone while driving is not permitted, even in traffic jams. Texting or scrolling behind the wheel will result in a traffic fine, which in 2026 can be as high as €440.

Where can you check your fines?

In the Netherlands, you can view your fines via the CJIB. There you’ll also find photos, details of the violation, and the associated costs.

Driving abroad: the most common traffic fines

If you drive abroad, there’s a good chance traffic violations won’t go unnoticed. Within Europe, license plate data is increasingly shared, meaning a fine can end up directly at your home, or with your employer. Dutch drivers most often receive fines for:

  • Speeding: even small excesses are fined in many countries
  • Holding a phone while driving: including when stationary or in traffic jams
  • Entering environmental zones incorrectly, such as ZTL zones in Italy, often with unclear signage
